Mission

The Mission of the Chirping Bird Society is to raise awareness of the dangers of the Plastic Age to our health and our oceans by recruiting new chirping birds into our flock.

Can't the government just deal with this?

No single nation or authority bears responsibility for the oceans; therefore, cleanup and prevention of plastic pollution are left up to NGOs and each of us individually.

About 300 million metric tons of plastic are produced globally each year.

Only about 10 percent of that is recycled. Of the plastic that is simply trashed, an estimated seven million tons end up in the sea each year.

There, it breaks down into smaller and smaller fragments over the years.

The tinier the pieces, the more easily they are swallowed by marine life. (One study found that fish in the North Pacific ingest as much as 24,000 tons of plastic debris a year.)

We toss away more than 100 billion plastic bottles every year!
Because of bags and bottles and all manner of plastics, we lose as many or more than one million birds and 100,000 sea creatures every year.
